Unknown Service Line Material Notice - What You Need to Know

Why did I receive this letter? Federal rules require every water system to identify the material of each service line. For some properties, historical records do not show what material is on the customer‑owned portion. When that happens, the City must classify the material as “unknown” and notify the property owner.

Does this mean there is a problem with my water? No. The notice does not indicate a hazard or a water‑quality issue. It only reflects incomplete historical documentation.

Has the City already completed the required inventory? Yes. The City identified as many service lines as possible and submitted the required report on time. The letter is part of the mandatory federal notification for properties listed as “unknown.”

What materials are possible? Common materials include copper, galvanized steel, plastic (PVC/PEX), or lead on very old properties. The notice does not mean your line is lead — only that the material is not documented.

Do I need to do anything? No action is required. The letter fulfills a federal notification requirement.

If you have documentation or knowledge of your private‑side service line material, the City would appreciate receiving that information.

Who can I contact with questions? City Hall or the Water Department can answer questions about the notice or the federal rules.
