CITY OF MOLENA NOTICE OF ELECTION CANCELLATION

Pursuant to O.C.G.A. §21-2-291 and §21-2-325, notice is hereby given that the City of Molena General Election scheduled for November 5, 2024, is cancelled.  The following candidates have qualified for office and are unopposed:

For Councilmember Post 3     Lisa T. Brogdon

For Councilmember Post 4     Ted H. Meeks, Jr.

For Councilmember Post 5     Damon S. Riggins

The above unopposed candidates shall be deemed to have voted for themselves.

The Post 5 candidate will be sworn in September 9, 2024, to complete the remainder of the vacant post.

All three candidates will be sworn in at the first Molena City Council meeting in January 2025.

Are you passionate about your community? Interested in making a difference? Consider running for Molena City Council. There are currently three posts up for reelection during the November election. Here are the details:

  • Where: Molena City Hall, 10 Springs Road, Molena, GA 30258
  • When: Monday, August 19, 2024, through Wednesday, August 21, 2024
  • What time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Term: Filling the remainder of now vacant Post 5.  Term ends on December 31, 2025
  • Qualifying Fee: $36.00

All posts are at large but will be designated Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4, and Post 5.  Currently, the terms for Posts 3-5 end 12/31/2024.  The new term will begin 1/1/2025 (to be sworn in at the first City Council meeting of the year) and will expire 12/31/2028.

Qualifications:

  1. Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Citizenship: You need to be a United States citizen.
  3. Residency: You must be a resident of Molena and registered to vote in Molena.
  4. Clean Legal Record: Having a clean legal record is essential.

What do City Council Members do?

  1. Introducing New Ordinances: Council members propose and create city ordinances.
  2. Voting on Legislation: They vote on motions to decide whether proposed ordinances become official.
  3. Budget Oversight: Council members negotiate and approve the city budget.
  4. Attending Meetings: Regularly attend public city council meetings and special sessions.
  5. Interacting with Constituents: Engage with constituents such as residents and local business owners. Attend events which will allow for further interaction with local residents and business owners.
  6. Hiring and Dismissal: Vote on hiring and dismissal of city employees.
  7. Grant Writing and Project Management: Write grants and manage city projects.
  8. Setting Goals and Tax Rates: Establish short- and long-term goals for the city and determine tax rates.
